The outer, longitudinal layer of the smooth muscle of the muscular coat of a hollow viscus. Terminologia Anatomica lists longitudinal layers of muscular coats (stratum longitudinale tunicae muscularis) of the following: 1) intermediate urethra (urethrae intermediae); 2) colon (coli); 3) prostatic uretra (urethrae prostaticae); 4) rectum (recti); 5) small intestine (intestini tenuis); 6) spongy urethra (urethrae spongiosae); 7) stomach (gastricae).
