An oral agent important in the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia and gastrointestinal stromal tumors; a specific inhibitor of the Philadelphia reciprocal chromosome translocation–created protein tyrosine kinase enzyme, which works by blocking rapid growth of the mutant clone of tumor cells.
