How to Do It

Primitive foods are not only super-foods; they’re humankind’s oldest favorites. So don’t obsess over what you “can’t eat.” Enjoy the feast ahead!

A paleo diet is high in protein. Our exclusively grass-fed organic Montana beef and wild-caught Alaskan salmon are as close to ancestral foods as you can get, unlike farmed salmon and feedlot “natural” meats you’ll find in other stores. Join our Buffalo Club to get first crack at our bison when it comes fresh to our store. Just ask at our meat department.

Our eggs are variously organic and locally produced by small growers who share our natural values. For those of a neolithic persuasion, we feature organic dairy products, including milk from Lifeline Dairy in Victor, Montana, and a great unsweetened European-style yogurt from Straus Creamery containing nothing but whole milk and cultures.

Tree nuts are among the most primitive-and healthiest-of foods. Researchers say nut-eaters live longer. We say “Yum!” whether it’s almonds, Brazils, cashews or something farther down the Roman alphabet.

One of the most profoundly positive things you can do for your health is to avoid foods with added sweetenings. Our paleo ancestors had small amounts of honey, and that was about it. Consider eating sweet foods instead of sweetened ones. Modern fruits are actually bred to be bigger and sweeter, meaning more sugar and less nutrition per bite. As an alternative consider smaller fruits, fresh berries, or the wild blueberries in our frozen section. As we always say, eat a rainbow of colorful foods to get a full spectrum of vitamins, minerals and health-boosting phytochemicals.

You can round out your primitive diet with organic vegetables, both cooked and raw, and whole grains and beans if you’ve got some modern genes.

One last radical idea: water. Pure and simple and calorie-free, it’s the ideal way to completely quench your thirst.
